Projects
Currently, I'm working on two different projects, which in my opinion, aren't connected at the moment.
The first project is about the relationship between language and art. In November 2009 I completed an artist residency in Yerevan, Armenia, to do research. Here I studied Armenian, a completely foreign langue to me. This language has a very unique alphabet and rich history. I worked with students of the Open University, and we exchanged English for Armenian lessons. This let me experience language from the side of the student, as well as teacher. I gained a very, very basic knowledge of the pronunciation, grammar, idioms, and syntax of Armenian. I started a print as well, exploring patterns, which are a very important element in language, and how we learn.
While in Yerevan, I once again became interested in Soviet Architecture. I began to photograph the domestic buildings there, and with the help of some fellow artists, I learned a bit about their construction. I also found it very interesting to examine the architecture of today, especially on the Northern Avenue in the center. Many architectural elements were similar to the same elements used during Soviet times, quite ironic. I also noticed that many things created in the public, or for a domestic space, were not created with a long-term mentality; instead, there seemed to be more temporary solutions. I will continue to work with the photographs I took there, and ideally produce an installation about these ideas.
